The Cane Hill Story is a story of pioneer enterprise and religious dedication that is truly astonishing. The country was still a wilderness. There were no roads, no mail, and no comforts of any kind. Yet these Cumberland Presbyterian Pioneers were able to organize a church and school that has exerted a tremendous influence on the development of our county and state.
You will be transported back in time to 1836, the year of Arkansas statehood. There you will meet a remarkable lady named Martha Blair Billingsley. She lived in the time after the Revolutionary War to just before the Civil War.
Martha Blair Billingsley and her extended family were among the first settlers to Washington County, Arkansas. She was a lady preacher, which was almost unheard of at that time.
This living history presentation will be preformed by Martha‘s great-great-great-great-great -granddaughter Linda Doede, who researched and wrote the script. Linda serves as Director of Historical Programs at Cane Hill College. In 2010, she received certification as a Living History Presenter by the Arkansas Living History Association.
Come hear Martha tell the story of the pioneers of Cane Hill, Arkansas.
